Problem:
A customer wants to set their users up as Users or Local Power Users instead of as Local Administrator. However, when they try to OCR a document through the Scan Workstation, they get a -1 error.
Solution:
This is a Windows security issue. When the Scan Workstation attempts to OCR a document, it first saves the temporary image file to the root of the C: drive. Specifically, it attempts to create or overwrite c:\rjstempimage.tif. However, Users or Power Users do not have the authority to write or modify any file or folder that is directly on the root of the C: Drive.
There are two solutions:
Solution 1: Change Setting
(RECOMMENDED) You can modify the INI file for the Scan Workstation so that it will place the temporary image into a different directory.
If you add the following INI file entry into RJSIMGSCAN.INI Scan Workstation will put the temp file into C:\Program Files\RJSIMGSCAN
tempimagefile=c:\program files\rjsimgscan\rjstempimage.tif
Solution 2: Change Securities
You could also change the security settings for the root of the C: Drive to allow one or all Power Users to be able to write to the C:\ directly.
Log in as Administrator
Disable "Simple File Sharing" within windows to add a secuity tab to the Folder Properties of C:\ "Enabling the security tab for file/directory properties in Windows XP or 2003" Right-click on Local Disk (C:), select Proprties and go to the Securities tab. Add the user or the entire power user group (depending upon what changes they want to make) to the Group List. Select the new entry and click the "Advanced" tab. Select the same entry in the new window and select Edit. Change the "Apply onto:" field to read "This folder and files". This option will allow the Administrator to limit these changes to the root of the C: and any immediate files in the root directory. At the very bottom of this window is a check box stating "Apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container only". '''Enable ''' this check box. This option keeps Windows from make the security change globally and only makes the change to what was specified in the previous step. In the Permissions list, add permission to create and write (4 settings). The permission to read, execute and navigate should already be enabled. Click OK Click OK Click OK to save and apply the changes. Log off and log in as the User or Power User and test it out.
