Problem:

User gets the following error message box when attempting to view a PDF document via the web using Internet Explorer web browser and the AS/400 Report Manager database.

Messagebox Error: "This page provides potentially unsafe information to an ActiveX control. You current security settings prohibit running controls in this manner. As a result, this page may not display correctly."

Solution:

1. This option can be used if you want to allow users to interact with ActiveX controls. The Adobe Acrobat Reader interacts with Internet Explorer via an ActiveX control.

In Internet Explorer 5.0 or above, select the following menu option and tab: "Tools/Internet Options/Security".

Click the "Custom Level" button and enable one or more of the following settings:

  • Download signed ActiveX controls - Set to Enable or Prompt.
  • Download unsigned ActiveX controls - Set to Enable or Prompt.
  • Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe - Set to Enable or Prompt.
  • Run ActiveX controls and plugins - Set to Enable or Prompt
  • Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting - Set to Enable or Prompt.

2. You can disable the web browser integration for the Adobe Acrobat Reader. This will cause PDF files to get launched directly via the Acrobat Viewer.

  • Acrobat 4.0: Start Acrobat reader and go to "File/Preferences/General" and disable the "Web Browser Integration" setting.
  • Acrobat 5.0: Start Acrobat reader and go to "Edit/Preferences/Options" and disable the "Display PDF in Browser" setting.
