Problem:

Customer suddenly started getting error 22214 - No return address specified when sending out reports via the Email Report Server. No reports will go out. They are using the RJS SMTP Email API and also use MS Exchange.

Solution:

We had the customer configure the Email Report Server to bounce off the rjssoftware.com SMTP server using support@rjssoftware.com as the from address and that worked fine.

We had the customer manually configure Outlook Express to send mail via SMTP and that worked fine.

We also installed the Email Report Server/400 on their system to send reports via SMTP and that worked fine.

The only thing we can figure is that there is some weird problem being caused by the customers MS Exchange mail server that is causing the RJS SMTP API to generate this error. The error is actually being generated by the Catalyst Socket Tools SMTP OCX.

In the end the customer has done the following for the time being:

1.) Configured Outlook Express as the default mail program in Internet Explorer via the "Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Email" option. This will cause the MAPI32 email API to use Outlook Express for sending reports from Email Report Server when MAPI is enabled for Email Report Server.

2.) Disable the following option in Outlook Express: Start Outlook Express and then select "Tools/Options/Security". Then uncheck "Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me."

3.) Changed WinSpool/400 Email Report Server to use MAPI by disabling all other special mail options.

API Group had this error and the mail admin said they had changed their mail server to utilize Secure SMTP. We downloaded the Secure SMTP API, changed the Email Report Server settings and started it and that worked.
