Problem:

The VIM32 Error return code 38141953 can occur if a user other than the user set up for the current Lotus Notes workstation is attempting to log into the Lotus Notes mail file designated in the MailFile section of the NOTES.INI file.

Example: Let's assume a Lotus Notes workstation is initially set up for a user named Joe Johnson and his mail file is mail/jjohnson.nsf. As long as Joe is the only person logging into Lotus Notes from this workstation via the VIM32 API, everything should work just fine. If another user named Bob Anderson attempts to log into the same Lotus Notes workstation with the VIM32 API, Bob will most likely get the VIM32 error return code 38141953. This error means that Bob doesn't have authority to access the mail file (mail/jjohnson.nsf) associated with this Lotus Notes workstation.

Solution:

In order to allow Bob Anderson to access Joe's mail file, the mail file security has to be set up so that Bob and any other Notes user who signs into the Lotus Notes workstation can access the mail file. Listed below are a few ways which can be used to allow other users to access a user's mail file in Lotus Notes.

Letting others use your mail database You can let other people open your mail database and read your mail, send messages for you, edit existing messages, and delete messages. Note Giving users access to your mail database also gives them access to your Notes calendar and to public documents in other databases, if you have any.

 1.	Choose Actions - Mail Tools - Delegation Profile.
 2.	In the E-mail Access section of the profile, do the following:

To let users read your mail, send new messages, and edit existing messages, enter their names in the "Read, send, and edit any document in my mail file" field.

 3.	Click OK.

Specifying a new mail file for a location You can specify a new mail file by using the following menu options 1. Choose File - Mobile - Edit Current Location 2. In the Mail file fields, enter the path to your mail file. 3. Choose File - Save to save the location settings.

Assigning an access level to a user name in the mail file access control list You can assign access to a mail database using the following menu options 1. Highlight the selected mail database and Choose File - Database - Access Control Use the Add button to add new users to the database access control list. Listed below are the minimal security levels which need to be assigned to the database for each new user.

Create documents Select this option to allow Authors to create documents. Managers, Designers, Editors, and Depositors are permanently assigned this access level. By default, the Create documents option is not selected for new Authors. The Create Documents option must be selected to allow other users to use the selected mail file when sending mail using Lotus Notes.
