Improving the Response Time of AS/400 PC Support & WinSpool/400 AS/400 PC Support can become quite slow when the system utilization reaches 80-100%. This typically means your main processor is overloaded with jobs. On most AS/400's, a PC Support job runs at priority level 50. This can cause problems when using WinSpool/400 or other interactive PC Support jobs which typically need to run at priority level 20. Fortunately there is a way to change your PC Support jobs so they can compete effectively for processor time. Listed below are some suggested performance improvement settings. They may not be appropriate for your AS/400 environment. Please check with your system administrator before changing these values.

Changing PC Support class so PC Support jobs run at priority 20. 1. At any command line, type CHGCLS and press F4 to prompt the command. Listed below are the suggested settings for the PC Support subsystem class:

                   Display Class Information

Class . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : QWCPCSUP
   Library . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : QGPL
 Run priority . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 20
 Time slice in milliseconds . . . . . . . . . . . : 2000
 Eligible for purge . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : *NO
 Default wait time in seconds . . . . . . . . . . : 30
 Maximum CPU time in milliseconds . . . . . . . . : *NOMAX
 Maximum temporary storage in K bytes . . . . . . : *NOMAX
 Text . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : PC SUPPORT CLASS
Changing the PC Support subsystem class will cause all PC Support jobs to run at priority level 20, thus improving performance on a heavily utilized system processor.

Changing Communications Program Evoke Settings To Run at priority 20. 1. At any command line, type CHGRTGE and press F4 to prompt the command. Listed below are the suggested settings for the communications program evoke routing entry in subsystem QCMN:

               Display Routing Entry Detail

 Subsystem description: QCMN Status: ACTIVE

Routing entry sequence number . . . . . . . : 300
Program . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : *RTGDTA
  Library . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . :
Class . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : QINTER
  Library . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : QSYS
Maximum active routing steps . . . . . . . : *NOMAX
Pool identifier . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 2 Compare value . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 'PGMEVOKE'
Compare start position . . . . . . . . . . : 29

Changing this routing entry will cause PC Support and other communications jobs to be started quicker because they will now compete with other interactive priority level 20 jobs.
